Welcome to Jirsch Sutherland’s We Care Mental Health and Wellbeing Program

Jirsch Sutherland’s We Care Mental Health and Wellbeing program gives us the skills to help people experiencing mental health problems and the knowledge to take better care of ourselves

As an insolvency practice, we are very aware of the impact that financial distress can have on anyone’s mental health and wellbeing

We take mental health and wellbeing seriously at Jirsch Sutherland and our desire to do more to support our staff, clients and referrers has led to the creation of a comprehensive and dynamic We Care Mental Health and Wellbeing Program.

As insolvency and business recovery specialists, we understand better than most the day to day stresses involved in running a business and the toll a period of financial distress can take on the mental health and wellbeing of everyone involved – our clients, their creditors and employees, their accountants and lawyers, and our Managers, Principals, Partners and support personnel.

Many of our clients deal with multiple and unremitting challenges and issues, including cash flow problems, demands from creditors and tax debts, and they put in long hours doing so. By the time we come on board, many are stressed and fatigued, some are struggling to cope, anxious and/or depressed.

As our specialists and referrers also work in this demanding and stressful environment, albeit for a comparatively shorter time than our clients, their mental health and wellbeing can also be affected.

So we’ve taken advice from Beyond Blue to create a dynamic, inclusive and comprehensive We Care Mental Health and Wellbeing Program.

In 2019, we were guided by Australian not-for-profit organisation Beyond Blue and created a mental health and wellbeing program to help us be more aware of mental health challenges and give us the skills to help those experiencing mental health issues.

Our program includes:

Attainment of the Mental Health First Aid Certificate

Many of our Managers, Partners and Principals have attained the Blended Mental Health First Aid Certificate, which provides simple, practical first aid skills for someone experiencing mental ill-health problems and who are in crisis. This initiative made Jirsch Sutherland the first insolvency practice in Australia to implement a companywide mental health training program.

Mental Health seminars supported by Beyond Blue for business advisers and owners/directors

Our breakfast seminars provide an opportunity for business advisers, company owners and directors to talk about the stresses involved with running a business and the importance of seeking help.

A Jirsch Sutherland Mental Health Policy and Employee Assistance Program

With assistance from Beyond Blue and other mental health experts, we updated our Mental Health Policy and to further support staff have introduced an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). In partnership with an independent and confidential specialist third party, all staff have access to support, guidance and counselling.

Proudly supporting Beyond Blue

Our support of Beyond Blue involves working closely together to create content, initiatives, and advice for financially distressed businesses and individuals for the not-for-profit organisation. In turn, Beyond Blue offers guidance for our mental health policies, content, training and seminars. And as our official charity, Jirsch Sutherland donates proceeds from fundraising activities to Beyond Blue.

Current mental health topic content on our website and in our newsletters

We feature mental health topic content on our website and newsletter JS Matters and to increase its online exposure, share it with accountants and lawyers we work with.

Jirsch Sutherland Mental Health and Wellbeing brochure

Our mental health and wellbeing brochure gives our clients vital information on mental health support services and includes an important checklist. The brochure also informs our clients that all our Managers, Principals and Partners have a Mental Health First Aid Certificate.

In-house mental health and wellbeing activities

During Mental Health Month and on R U OK Day each year we run a variety of activities and events for staff, clients and referrers including seminars with a Beyond Blue speaker, Walk and Talk lunch-hour tours, and staff games to increase awareness of mental health and take time out to recharge, reflect, learn and engage with colleagues.

If your business, or you or a colleague is experiencing financial difficulties that’s affecting your mental health and wellbeing, please contact us on 1300 547 724 or email enquiries@jirschsutherland.com.au
