Newcastle is the economic hub of NSW’s Hunter region and the state’s second most-populated area. It is also where Jirsch Sutherland opened its first expansion office in 1993.
The Newcastle office has grown steadily since its early days as a micro office, and is headed by Partners Lloyd Kerr and Bradd Morelli. Today our office has 11 team members including fellow Partner Stewart Free, two senior managers and their teams. The geographical area covered by Jirsch Sutherland in Newcastle has also expanded and now covers the Hunter region, Hawkesbury, the central to mid-north coast of NSW and New England.
As the region’s economy has evolved, so too have the types of industries we work in. Today, a substantial and growing portion of Newcastle’s economy is based around the service sectors, a situation that is reflected in the types of matters we handle.
While our mainstay industry sector is transport, we also handle matters for building and construction companies, engineering firms, labour hire businesses, steel fabricators, retail and hospitality.
We provide a range of specialist services including:
The feedback from our clients shows that what they like is how we take the time to understand the local business community, trends and challenges. Not only are we members of the Hunter Chamber of Commerce, we also have strong business relationships with local professional and financial services firms.
We have also immersed ourselves in the wider community, particularly through fund-raising activities, such as with the annual surfing competition Surfest. With Surfest, we team with the Vanuatu Surfing Association to assist young surfers travel to Newcastle to compete.
Wheeling and Able is another charity we support. Here, we provide assistance to children and young people with physical disabilities. In addition, we support the Aspect Hunter School for children on the autism spectrum. Partner Lloyd Kerr is also heavily involved with local rugby union clubs, where he was a referee for over 10 years and is now on the board of the Referees’ Association.
